Environmental Science

It has been a week of Toxic Elements and Mining in class before spring break.

After real mining explosions on Tuesday, we will have a Mining Simulation Lab Final on Thursday.

Students may stay after school on Thursday to complete any late work.

THIS WEEK IS ALL   D-E-O-X-Y-R-I-B-O-N-U-C-L-E-I-C  A-C-I-D  - That's DNA for short.

We are learning about the power of our unique DNA code and how DNA builds proteins that = us !

Friday will be fun with DNA at the movies including the famous Jurassic Park.

***** Extra Credit:  [+5]  Anyone who writes down the 3 people who helped discover DNA and
                                           hand it in on paper to me--- Easy as can be!

***** Check last post in March for other [+10] extra credit- Write a one page report on any one of the
                                                                                                    3 people above.  Go for it!

Environmental Club

We had our first Tioga Trails workday of 2012 on Sat. March 10.  Six students worked hard to clear out some giant honeysuckle!! 

We have a new display on Forms of Energy and Urbanization in the 100's case.  We will be looking for one, great, display theme to finish the year.  Maybe a preview of the 2013 Smoky Mountains Trip!!

After Spring Break, we will first meet on Tues. March 27.  Regular Meeting.
The first two Tuesdays in April we will work on the new LHS Flyer Forest Trail -past the track.
Stay tuned for more details about our new woodchip trail.

DNA is in all of our cells!!  How COOL!!  Now, for EXTRA CREDIT, you can write a half page report on one of the people who discovered DNA {+10 points}.  Print an internet article one of these people:
James Watson  /  Francis Crick  /  Rosalind Franklin .  Write a page summary on their life with DNA for points!!  GO FOR IT!!!

Environmental Club

The CLUB had a great trip to the zoo.  We enjoyed the reptile house tour and a personal tour of the Hellbender Room.  Ozark Hellbenders are now considered an endangered species!

March 6- We will begin laying out the trail for the LHS Flyer Forest Trail. 
               We will begin a quick TJ's Pizza Sale.

*** Costa Rica Trip meeting has been changed.  New date is Tuesday, March 27.  Payments are due at this time.  It is critical for all students to attend with at least one parent.  Email me if you have questions.

***Env. Club Ozark trip is set for May 5-6. Students need to sign up - cost is $60.00.  We will be canoeing on the Current River, camping at Aker's Ferry, and touring a trout hatchery and Onondoga Cave on Sunday!

Environmental Science

Env. Science students are watching Erin Brokovich this week.  Based on a true story in the 1980's, the movie shows the struggle of common citizens being polluted by a big corporation and an attorney who comes to try and help them. 
**Students are following one of the main characters:  Ed Masry, Erin Brokovich, Donna Jensen.  Students are to write a one page, character transformation essay based on their chosen character.  Due 3/8.

EXTRA CREDIT: (+5).  Identify the two National Parks featured in the pictures below.  What is the issue with the guy and the buffalo?  Also, Identify the major event that happened in one of the parks, based on the photos of the charred trees.

ENJOY THE VIDEO CLIPS AT THE END!  YOU NEED TO VISIT THIS 1ST NATIONAL PARK!

Biology- B

Biology students took their test yesterday on Cell Processes.  We are now experts on Photosynthesis, Mitosis, and Diffusion.   We now have knowledge about Cancer and Stem Cells.
***students can get extra credit for interviewing people on their stem cell opinions.  Is it controversial?

Next week we begin the BIG DNA unit- THE CODE OF LIFE!!!

We will be pushing hard through big-time Biology until the EOC Exam April 23.
