Environmental Science

Environmental Science classes are finishing the first semester with our unit on Air and Atmospheric Processes.  The last 2 weeks will be spent investigating the topic of Climate Change / Global Warming, as the second half of our unit.  (Chapter 16)

Students will look at Climate Change from their textbook, from news stories, from authors, from international governments, from environmental organizations, and from our own political system.
Students will accumulate data from all over the globe and see changes before their eyes.

What do you think?  What is the best solution?  What can 'I' do?  What will happen?

Many good questions here for everyone.  We have addressed our atmosphere, uban smog, acid rain, ozone depletion, AND all the "things" that make up AIR.  Now comes along carbon dioxide and methane and chlorofluorocarbons and.......... solutions!

Students are to be memorizing chemical reactions for each pollution process.
Students should know the sources of the pollution and effects on humans and the environment.

***We will have a unit exam in December and then our first semester final exam.

***Final Action Points are due by Tuesday, December 11.

APES Course

Students succesfully completed Unit 3 covering the Environmental Basics of Matter, Energy, and Life along with Biochemical Cycles.  Students should have mastered the forms and processes of the Carbon and Nitrogen cycle in addition to 65 Vocabulary words from Chapter 3- A FUN REVIEW!

Students went on our first semester, all day field trip on Monday, Nov. 19.  We learned alot touring the Bussen Quarry along with a Mississippi River visit, The Arch, The Old Courthouse, and the Science Center-- all in one day!!  Students typed up the facts they learned as a culminating activity.

We now finish our tour of Ecological themes in Environmental Science with Unit 4.  This unit covers chapters 4, 5, and 11 and topics like Evolution, Adaptation, Speciation, Biomes, and Biodiversity.

We will have a unit exam and then prepare for the first semester final exam.  Preparation will include periodic testing of FRQ during class time.  Students should be prepared for these weekly "quizzes".

APES

WELCOME TO A GREAT, NEW CLASS AND A GREAT, NEW YEAR!!!!

APES has started the year with a unit on Populations (Chapter 6 and 7).
Students have been doing a Duckweed Population Lab, which we redesigned due to early problems.

APES students went to the GEMPP outdoor classroom for two days and collected various soil samples.
We have spent this week analyzing our samples for soil texture, porosity, percolation, and water holding capacity.  We will also be looking at macroinvertebrates in the leaf litter.  Although soil is not directly tied to populations, I wanted the students to get involved in lab analysis early in the year.
Soil will NOT be on the Populations Test.

Students are well under way with their lab/ current event journals.  This is a very important part of the course- students may have to present their lab journal to a college for college credit.

***First Exam will be Thur or Fri., Sept. 27 or 28.  ***

ACTION POINTS ARE AN IMPORTANT PART OF THE CLASS.
Students need 60 Action Points per quarter.  Action Points are due on MONDAY, OCT. 8.

Other important dates:   Kid class at GEMPP are Sept. 15 and 22.    25 Action Points!!
